Ysgol Bro Carmel’s Safeguarding Team

It is of the utmost importance that children feel safe when they attend school and they know who to talk to if anything is worrying them.

As a school, we take safeguarding our children seriously. Our safeguarding team consists of:

  • Mr Martell – Designated Safeguarding Person (DSP)
  • Mrs Jones – Deputy Designated Safeguarding Person (DDSP)
  • Mr Thomas – Safeguarding Link Governor

The DSP and DDSP meet weekly to discuss all things related to safeguarding, including ALN, pastoral and attendance to make sure we are doing everything we can to keep children safe. All safeguarding posters are displayed in every classroom, as well as other public places across the school. As well as talking to our safeguarding team, children know they can talk to any adults across school, who have all had safeguarding training.

If you would like to contact the safeguarding team, please contact the school office or email ycmail@hwbcymru.net.

In conjunction with North Wales Police, Ysgol Bro Carmel are involved in an initiative called Operation Encompass. The purpose of Operation Encompass is to safeguard and support children and young people who have been involved in, heard or witnessed a domestic abuse incident. Following such an incident, children can arrive at school distressed, upset, worried and unprepared. Operation Encompass aims to ensure that appropriate school staff are made aware early enough to support children and young people in a way that means they feel safe and included.

At Ysgol Bro Carmel, Mr Martell is our Key Adult. This is a valuable initiative that means we can continue to support and help children and families within our school community when they need it the most. You can find our more by visiting http://www.operationencompass.org or by contacting Mr Martell.

Prevent Duty

As a school we recognise that safeguarding against radicalisation is no different from safeguarding against any other vulnerability. All staff are expected to uphold and promote the fundamental principles of British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

The Prevent Duty Guidance (under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 ) was released by the Government and places a duty on schools, and other agencies, to “have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”.  This legal duty came into force on 1st July 2015.

As part of our commitment to safeguarding and child protection, we fully the governments Prevent Strategy. Our Safeguarding Lead Prevent Leader is Mr Martell.

What is the Prevent Strategy?

The Prevent Strategy is a government strategy designed to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

It aims are to:

•             respond to the ideological challenge we face from terrorism and aspects of terrorism, and the threat we face from those who promote these views.

•             provide practical help to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure they are given appropriate advice and support.

•             work with a wide range of sectors (including education, criminal justice, faith charities, online and health.

At Ysgol Bro Carmel we ensure that we teach the children about the Prevent Aims. In each year group we teach our children to be safe and recognise the possible dangers they may face. Teachers make sure that this is done in a sensitive and age appropriate way. We also protect children from the risk of radicalisation. For example, we use filters on the internet to make sure they can’t access unsuitable material and we ensure the appropriate vetting of visitors who come into the school to work with the pupils.
