The Equality Act 2010: Understanding Our Responsibilities
The Equality Act 2010 provides an important legal framework for protecting individuals from discrimination and promoting equality.
As a public body, Ysgol Bro Carmel has responsibilities under the Public Sector Equality Duty to have due regard to the need to:
- Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
- Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and those who do not.
- Foster good relations between people from different backgrounds.
The Equality Act identifies nine protected characteristics:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Marriage and civil partnership
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race
- Religion or belief
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
The way these protections and duties apply can vary according to the characteristic and the educational context.
At Ysgol Bro Carmel, we help children understand the importance of fairness, respect and treating others with dignity through age-appropriate learning and everyday school experiences.

No Outsiders: Everyone Is Welcome
At Ysgol Bro Carmel, we support our commitment to equality and inclusion through the No Outsiders programme.
No Outsiders uses carefully selected children’s picture books and age-appropriate activities to help pupils understand that everyone is different and everyone deserves to feel included.
The programme encourages children to recognise that differences should never prevent people from forming friendships, working together or treating one another with respect.
What do children learn through No Outsiders?
Children explore important messages about:
- Respecting and accepting differences.
- Recognising that everyone deserves kindness.
- Understanding that families and communities are diverse.
- Challenging stereotypes and unfair treatment.
- Developing empathy and positive relationships.
- Helping others feel included and valued.
The programme supports children’s personal and social development and complements our wider approach to Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE).
Learning is adapted to children’s ages and stages of development.

Challenging Discrimination, Bullying and Stereotypes
Every child has the right to feel safe and respected at school.
We work to create a positive school culture in which discrimination, bullying and prejudice are challenged appropriately.
Through teaching, assemblies, discussions and everyday interactions, children learn to recognise unfair treatment, understand the impact of their actions and develop respectful relationships.
We encourage pupils to speak to a trusted adult if they experience or witness behaviour that makes someone feel excluded, unsafe or uncomfortable.
Our aim is to help children develop the confidence to stand up for others, challenge stereotypes appropriately and contribute to a school community built on kindness and mutual respect.
Working in Partnership with Parents and Carers
Parents and carers play an important role in helping children develop positive attitudes towards equality, diversity and inclusion.
We value the different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives that families bring to our school community.
By working together, we can reinforce important messages about kindness, fairness, respect and belonging.
We encourage parents and carers to contact us if they have questions about our approach to equality, concerns about discrimination or suggestions for making our school even more inclusive.
